About an hour away from Venice, Burano is a little fishing village that's probably the most colorful place on earth. It's claimed to be the happiest island in Italy, and maybe even the happiest town in the world! But I wouldn't doubt it because once you set foot on this island, it's impossible to not feel a rush of happiness.
With rows and rows of rainbow houses and gondolas lining the canal, Burano has no bad angles. As you walk through the village, you'll be awestruck by your surroundings and pinching yourself to make sure that this place is real. And yes, let me assure you, it is! I felt like I was in a dreamland and was absolutely giddy as I wandered down vibrant alleyways. If you need a bit of cheering up, this place will surely do the trick.
How to get there
To get to Burano from Santa Lucia Station in Venice, take vaparetto (water taxi) number 3 to Murano Faro. If you've got time to spare, Murano is also a little gem, famous for glass making, so feel free to wander about here. Otherwise, transfer to vaparetto number 12 to make your way to Burano.
It takes a little while to get there, but it's well worth the effort and the route is scenic. I think if you make it all the way to Venice and don't stop by Burano, you're truly missing out!
